Groundwater Project at Sand Mining Site in Dengkil Selangor

Half day visit to an active sand mining site with other members of my group. The visit was part of the groundwater modeling project that will be carried out on this site. The study will also involve drilling and conducting a resistivity survey. The main objective of the study is to investigate the potential impact of sand mining on the groundwater regime (and quality) at the study area.
Picture shows the overview of an open pit mine at the study area. The top soil is considered as an overburden (about 5 m thick) and it was removed to expose the clean sand underneath. The thickness of the sand is approximately 15 m. Discussion on site with the other consultants.
This was the best part of the field trip when the front tyres of our 4WD Hilux (white) were trapped in a wet and slippery muddy road.

Congratulation to Mr Muchlis Idham (my PhD Student)

Well done and congratulations to Mr Muchlis Idham who successfully defended his PhD thesis in a viva this afternoon. He has conducted a research entitled "the effect of soil heterogeneity on the migration of DNAPL using Geotechnical Centrifuge Physical Modeling". The external examiner during the viva was Prof Dr Nurly Gofar from UTM and Assoc. Prof Dr Zulfahmi acted as an internal. So, job well done and good luck!.

1st Geo-Environment Talk

First Geo-Environment Talk was held on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Geology Meeting Room in UKM. The talk was given by Dr. Nik Norsyahariati Nik Daud from Universiti Putra Malaysia. She graduated from Geoenvironmental Research Centre (GRC) in Cardiff University under the supervision of Prof Hywel Thomas.

Effect of pumping on the contaminant transport model

This simulation was made on a landfill that constantly discharge 50mg/L of Pb. The landfill was modeled using visual Modflow, considering a linear sorption, with an initial Pb as 100mg/L, the model shows the effect of pumping on the Pb transport. The pumping rate was 1000m3/day.

3-D Contaminant Transport Modeling using Visual MODFLOW Pro

Groundwater flow and contaminant transport modeling was performed using Visual MODFLOW Pro on a Landfill in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). The study has successfully delineate the contaminant migration pathway and 3-D models were developed to visualize these contaminant pathways.
(i) 2-D Model of contaminant transport(ii) 3-D model of contaminant transport after 2050 days (about 5.7 years)

(iii) 3-D model of contaminant transport after 7200 days (20 years)
