Effect of pumping on the contaminant transport model

This simulation was made on a landfill that constantly discharge 50mg/L of Pb. The landfill was modeled using visual Modflow, considering a linear sorption, with an initial Pb as 100mg/L, the model shows the effect of pumping on the Pb transport. The pumping rate was 1000m3/day.

Water Level Sensor for Putrajaya Wetland Monitoring Work

Perbadanan Putrajaya has successfully installed water level sensors at eleven (11) monitoring stations around Putrajaya Lake and Wetlands. The instrument can automatically measure water level every 10-minutes and the data can be retrieved from the data logger using a portable PC. Photos show the water level sensor instrument and a field demostration of using this equipment by Global Water to all people involved with the monitoring project namely Alam Bersih Sdn. Half-day site visit to Taman Beringin former landfill (which was already properly closed) was conducted with a team from IKRAM Bhd. The visit was part of the consultation work to identify the leachate outflow from this former landfill to surrounding water bodies adjacent to this area, namely Sungai Batu and several man-made ponds. The study will be conducted using a MODFLOW groundwater simulation software to look at this problem and to recommend the best remediation option available to hinder the flow of leachate into water bodies. Photos show the condition of the site during the site visit.

A new advanced material for groundwater treatment was successfully developed at Geology Laboratory in UKM. This material was developed by my MSc student (Ms. Noraznida Kamaruzaman) using chemical reducing method in the laboratory. This research was funded by FRGS Research Grant from MOSTI. Below are some photos of the NZVI. Further research is still in progress to characterize the material and to determine its adsorption capacity.

A research team from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have visited the Geotechnical Centrifuge facility in UKM. The group was headed by Assoc. Prof Dr Ir. Ramli Nazir and Assoc. Prof. Dr Nurly Gofar. Other persons in the group were Zulkifle, Mr Ali and Dr Amin. The main objective of the visit was to discuss about potential collaboration in research especially with related to geotechnical centrifuge. The outcome of the meeting was very successfully for the enhancement of geotechnical centrifuge research in Malaysia, where Dr Ramli is one of the pioneer in this field in Malaysia. Assoc. Prof. Dr Ramli is asking some questions related to the centrifuge.

A potential use of limestone and zeolite to neutralize acid mine drainage in Sg. lembing Pahang

This is a simple experiment that was conducted by my 3rd Year Geology Student (Aida Rahayu). Two tanks were used to neutralize low pH acid mine water collected at Sg Lembing ex-Tin mine in Pahang. Zeolit was purchased from Indonesia while limestone was collected at Bukit Panching Quarry in Kuantan Pahang. Results were excellent and will be published soon.

The Selinsing Gold Mine Project is located at Bukit Selinsing near Sungai Koyan, approximately 65 km north of Raub and 30km west of Kuala Lipis on the lineament known as the Raub Bentong Suture. Selinsing is located approximately 2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia on a sealed highway in Pahang State, which is the largest gold producing state in Malaysia. Two sediment-monitoring exercises (water and sediment sampling & discharge measurements) were carried out during the months of January-February 2011 within the Putrajaya Lake & Wetlands complex. The sampling exercises were carried out on the 13 and 27 January 2011 and 16 February 2011 during moderately dry conditions. The sampling stations contain weir structures and culverts. 29 of these monitoring stations are located within the wetland arms and 10 are located around Putrajaya Lake.

Final Report of the consultation work for NAHRIM

UKM Pakarunding (UKMP) was appointed as a consultant by National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM) to conduct a Desktop Study on Groundwater Contamination at Landfill Sites in Selangor. A total of 20 landfills have been identified in Selangor but only 17 were investigated in this study. The other three landfills are too small and no longer operating. From the 17 landfills, 7 landfills are still in operation while the others were either abandoned or closed. Regardless of the current status of these landfills, they pose significant environmental problems and threats especially to the groundwater system in this state. Photo shows the final reports that were completed and already submitted to NAHRIM. Other consultants of the project were Prof Raihan Taha, Prof Rahim Samsudin, Mr Jasni and myself as a project leader.

The East Mountainous Landfill Site is a storage structure (landfill dam) constructed in a valley in the upper reach of the Yamashina Otowa River for disposing incineration residues and incombustibles in the mountainous region. The disposal site is carefully operated to achieve great protection for the living environment and human. The area of the landfill is 156 ha, including landfill area about 24 ha. The landfill volume is about 4,500,000 m3. The operation started in FY2000 after 17 years of research and construction, starting in 1982. The project cost is approximately 52,300 million yen, and some of the cost was supported by the Japanese Government (i.e. the Federal Government). Remediation of illegal dump site in Jepun

It is not exactly meant "illegal" dumpsite. The landfill was indeed legal but illegal due to the received amount of waste that exceeded the permitted value allowed by the authority. That was why the word "illegal" was used. The landfill is now covered with geomembrane to prevent contact of the rubbish with rain water.

The landfill is also equipped with groundwater diversion tunnel, to divert the groundwater flow from flowing trough the contaminated landfill.

TBM machine was used to make the tunnel. Geology consists of shale and chert (sedimentary rock)

The cost for remediation is USD100 million !!.

Kansai International Airport Osaka Japan: A sinking airport

Just arrived at Kansai International Airport from KLIA. A journey took 6 1/2 hours from KLIA, departed at 12am and reached osaka at 7am. Surprised to see a hairline crack on the floor of the airport due to 2 main reasons; i.e. settlement of the airport because the airport was built on the reclamation land; or possibly due to an earthquake. Japan island is an island arc that is a product of subduction zone between two lithospheric plates that collide with each other.

The issue highlighted in the discussion was about a groundwater abstraction project at Batang Padang in Perak, that will be developed by Simedarby (under Water Management Unit) for fresh water supply to Klang Valley.

A 2-D tank model was used to model the movement of DNAPL (tetrachloroethylene, TCE) in various soil conditions. TCE was dyed using Sudan V to produce strong red color to visualize its movement in the tank. The soil heterogeneities such as clay lenses, bedding planes, unsaturated-saturated zone are discovered to influence the migration pattern of DNAPL in soil.

The downward movement of TCE is retarded by the water table. It migrates laterally along the surface of the water table until its self weight (due to gravity) will overcome the capillary pressure and move to the bottom of the tank.

A new research on Zero Valent Iron (ZVI) was recently conducted by my PhD student Mr. Fares As Shaebi. ZVI was self-made in the laboratory using certain chemical processes. This ZVI was compared with the ZVI collected from US and Japan. They seemed to be almost similar. Sorption test indicated that this ZVI can be used to sorb arsenic contaminat in arsenic contaminated site. Figure shows the use of mini tank to simulate the usefulness of ZVI as permeable reactive barrier material to remove arsenic in groundwater (red solution in the tank).

A visit to Geotechnical Centrifuge Lab in NUS was conducted in 31 March 2009. I was accompanied by my colleague and co-researcher Prof Dr Abdul Rahim Samsudin. We had a meeting and discussion on the centrifuge research at NUS with Prof C.F. Leung.

A small (mini) Geotechnical Centrifuge was built at the Faculty of Science and Technology in UKM. A 0.6 m diameter beam centrifuge took almost one year to complete with the cost of less than RM50,000 (to date). The centrifuge will be upgraded from time to time with sensors, slip ring, etc. The centrifuge has gravity acceleration of 140g (0.14 g-tonne) and maximum rotational speed of 500RPM. It is equipped with colour video recorder, so that real time video can be watched during the experiment. Thanks to all the technician involved in this project (Latiff, Hamid, Rosli, Zaki, Muchlis, and Razlan).

Sg Sabai Level O Landfill is located in Hulu Selangor. The site is not properly managed, the waste is exposed to rainfall. The leachate was clearly observed on site and it flows into the water logged area which is just a few meters from the site. This is a good example of NIMBY syndrome...Not In My Backyard. But it is ok In Someone Else Backyard (ISEBY).

Kubang Badak Landfill

This is a very interesting outcrop that was discovered in Penang beach. Two layers of a very coarse sand may indicate high current deposits that probably can be associated with tsunami waves.

I had the opportunity to visit Goa on the 1st till 7th of October 2008. It was a wonderful experience. I stayed at Marriott Hotel for 4 nights, the hotel was excellent and the food was nice as well. I attended an International Conference in Geomechanics organised by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. The conference was well organised!. I had a wonderful time in Goa.

Sg Kembong Landfill

Fresh leachate (i.e. waste juice) from landfill "farm". It flows straight to Sg Kembong especially during rainy session. This photo was taken in August 2008. The same river had ammonium problem originated from this landfill before (2006?). It caused pollution and degraded the water quality of Semenyeh Dam. So, the authorities never learnt from the previous accident!! Dont they??.
